"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
One of the greatest commercials ever made.

'Tis the season for sharing, after all. ^_~

This is a vintage 1990s commercial that Staples used for years to advertise the Back to School school supplies purchasing season. It's just been remastered for 2009--I saw it on TV for the first time in years. Ah, the nostalgia.

I'll never forget the first time I saw it. I was in the kitchen eating breakfast. My mother had the TV on. It was July; I was in middle school. All of a sudden, a burst of classic Christmas music. It immediately gets your attention because you are about as far away seasonally from Christmas as you can possibly be. And then you realize what it's advertising. The father's glee is classic. And the commercial is really well-constructed.

If you've never seen this commercial before, it's a must-see. And if you have, I'm betting you'll enjoy seeing it again.

Anybody else have a favorite great commercial?

I love that ad!

My favorites are the Carlton Draught "The Big Beer Ad" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH3GH7Pn_eA) and the Cat Wranglers one that still makes me giggle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgH4h4KMoGk).

Ahaha! I haven't seen it, but that's so cute and so hilarious. Exactly how my family was in back to school shopping.

My favorite commercial is the Oven/Chef one by Quizno's XD.

Figures your favorite would be one with a phallic joke. ^_~

Ummm...hate to rain on the parade, but unless he's a stay-at-home dad, shouldn't that be Mom celebrating getting the kids out of her hair and out of the house and back to school?

And my favorite commercials would seriously date me. They may be on YouTube but I'm too lazy to look them up, plus whether YouTube and my computer will play nicely is an open question. Most days I don't have Flash but some days I do. Go figure.

Huh. *shrugs* I'm not sure why it's a man vs. a woman is worth analyzing. There might not be a good reason (though I can think of many)...but since everyone can tell he's supposed to the kids' dad, inasmuch as this is about parents' being thrilled their kids are going back to school, it works.

As a parent who's been on both sides of the issue, I can tell you that it's the parent who's home with the kids who rejoices over their going back to school. Other than problems with daycare or childcare, it's no skin off the nose of the working parent unless they're also a single parent.

So not a man vs. woman thing but a who's the caregiver thing. Still usually the mom, not the dad. Most dads I know wouldn't be singing "It's the most wonderful time of the year", but many moms would.

So, in other words, you think the parent in this commercial should be a woman because--stereotypically and within the realm of your own personal experience--she'd be the one staying at home and therefore rejoicing? But it's my understanding that, in fact, the majority of families with kids these days in the US have two working parents. Besides, I think that one of the pleasures of this commercial, besides being very well constructed, is the ways in which it subtly defies your expectations. About seasonal and social appropriateness, of course, but also about gender. After all, stereotypically it wouldn't be the dad doing the shopping for the kids, period.

The commercial struck me as false because I know very few dads who would be that giddy about kids going back to school. Maybe my husband would have been, because he stayed home with our daughter until he returned to work when she was twelve. Now I'm home full time and I would feel that giddy, as entertaining her takes up a lot of my time.

I may be reacting to the commercial on the basis of my personal experience here, but then again that's how these things speak to us, don't they? If it doesn't coincide with my experience or observation, it's going to ring false to me.

Wow, that guy in the first one looks like Pee-Wee Herman. ^^;;

Is it sad that I look forward to this commercial each year? It is just that every time that I see it for the first time of the year, it just cracks me up. =P

It hasn't aired for years, I don't think. They just brought it back for 2009.
