Poll #1380902 Graduation

Should I attend graduation (for my MA from NYU)--and pay all the attendant costs (cap and gown rental, etc.)?

Yes. You'll regret it if you don't.
No. Save the pomp and circumstance for when you get your PhD.

I only went to my masters one because my parents wanted to see it & I needed to talk to my advisor.. And only went to my doctoral one because parents and sister wanted to see it! But I’m really not big on ceremonies…

I think you should go if you have family members who will come watch you. If your family won't be there, then skip it.

Don't you sort of want to own a gown at some point? You're going to need one when you become a professor and are forced to attend the graduation ceremonies of your students. I bought my undergrad gown. There's also the issue of the tradition of colors based on where you went to school, etc. It's all a big confusing mess, though, so I'm not up on all the details.

*laughs* The masters gown isn't the same as the doctoral gown.

I'm sure you can tell what my answer was...!

Depends for me on how expensive it is.

I'd think it would be a great ceremony to mentally finish your thoughts about your time there with a clear-cut full stop and some celebration to show that you did it well.

But then I have no idea as we have no official university ceremonies whatsoever over here when we finish our degrees.
