This week's topic is anime conventions and features super-special guest discussant Natalie Baan (velvetpaws on LiveJournal)!
Natalie has freelanced for the manga industry, but she is best known in the anime/manga community as a fanfic writer. "Sakura and Snow," anyone? Most importantly, however, the gals were all absolutely wowed by her brilliance, and you will be too.
I still maintain that it's not so much the sorts of people at anime conventions that have changed since I attended my first back con in 2000, but rather the increase in organizational scale. It's waaay harder to create a sentiment of fellow feeling amongst nearly 20,000 guests than it is amongst 2,000. But it isn't impossible. Anyone see what happened at the Yen Press panel last Sunday? By the end, half the audience was eager to win an extra copy of Haruhi
for the poor kid Rich was playfully bullying throughout the entire contest (even though they didn't know him before that moment, even though they knew he wouldn't ultimately walk away empty-handed). So yeah...I rest my case.
