Kousaka, Yuuki. Sweet Admiration. Trans. Andria Cheng. Gardena, CA: Juné, 2008. Summary
: With illustrations by Shiina Midori. Katsuya has loved Shio since he and his little brother stayed the summer in Katsuya's hometown. Now Katsuya has moved to Tokyo to work for the start-up company Slice City Corporation because he has heard that Shio is affiliated with it. Little does he suspect, however, that he will end up sharing an apartment with Shio! When their icily cordial relationship soon softens into attraction affection, not even Shio's half-brother Takamasa can get in their way. Comments
: Oh my god, I can't believe it; standard, natural English prose from Juné's Yaoi Novel line! For the first time ever!! A translation that's actually worth the paper it's printed on!!!
(Pardon me while I forget to breathe. Do you think DMP was listening to me? Nah...) Anyway, I could actually appreciate this novel on its own terms...and granted, there isn't much to it. It's a short and basic boy-meets-boy tale, focusing almost exclusively upon the gradual development and buildup of the relationship between Katsuya and Shio. There's no complexity, and no kink. Only one subplot (the rival half-brother). No sex till the very last chapter (in case you were expecting lots and lots of gay porn--sorry). But it is
tooth-rottingly romantic, which makes it perfect for rotting the brain as well. All in all, it's not bad. Just don't expect anything beyond the bare basics. Notes
: paperback, 1st American edition; first published in Japan by Oakla Shuppan in 2007 Rating
- Nothing to write home about, even if you're a fan of the BL genre, but there are far worse ways to waste time.
