~生まれた町で夢見てきた...~
"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
Quote of the Day (I thought the days of the NYT getting anime wrong were over. >_< Guess not.)

Winter
In the 1980s, a Japanese animated movie, "Dragon Bell," used the monkey king, a Chinese classic if ever there was one, as its main character. - Richard Bernstein, "The Panda That Roared," The New York Times

He means Dragon Ball.

Huh. I could have sworn there was a Z somewhere in the title. Maybe it was the sequel^^ It seemed like the series would never end.

The "Z" is something VIZ did in North America to distinguish a later plot from an earlier one. The original manga--all 42 or whatever volumes--was just "Dragon Ball."

In that case, they did the same in Thailand. Each story arc had a different name added after the DB part.

Huh. I guess they're right that the U.S. interprets Japanese pop culture for the rest of the world...

I don't know if the series ran at the same time in both countries.

Actually, I think there was a "Z" that got attached to a later anime series. It was the *manga* that VIZ added the "Z" to where it wasn't in the original Japanese.

Wasn't DB inspired by a Chinese story called Journey West [Chinese classic]...I think the name Goku is the name of the Monkey King character - but then how could he have forgotten Saiyuki? Isn't that also based on the same character?

Also, did Bernstein even mention that horrid Chinese live action rip off film of Dragonball? I think the score was settled on the 'rip-off' front.

^_^

The Dragon Ball anime was almost certainly vastly more popular than Saiyuuki in China. And it's DUH-tastic that there was nothing to "forget" if he couldn't even spell the title right.

Bwha! I didn't even notice that part =_=;; I would say typo...but that would be too merciful.

Err...why did you think I was complaining about this quote in the first place?

Who knows...?
