The Quick and Dirty MangaNEXT Report
12th-Oct-2007 02:22 am
Winter
I'm way too busy for anything more, so it's going to be brief. Apologies in advance to anyone who was expecting something as comprehensive as last year.

THE NEW
-Meeting Jason Thompson, artist, editor, and author (of the newly-released Manga: The Complete Guide) in person for the first time after corresponding via email.
-Skimming a few pages of the first volume of Mousou Shoujo Otaku-kei, which Media Blasters will be releasing in English under the title "Fujoshi Rumi." Absolutely hilarious. Looks like a must-have for anyone who suspects that she might be a fujoshi.
-Conversing with artists in the Artists' Alley and getting some insight into that side of the manga industry here, which I know woefully little about.

THE NOSTALGIC
-Spending time and catching up with friends (Louise, Chris, Jesse, etc.) whom I've not seen in years. One, who I first met many years ago during a state-sponsored summer school program in the sciences, is now a software engineer working on top-secret military contracts. (She insists that it sounds much cooler than it actually is. Which doesn't matter because it still gives me an inferiority complex.)
-Spending time with *ahem* industry people (Mari, Frank, etc.) whom I've not seen since last year's MangaNEXT. Erica Friedman of ALC Publishing has been present at every anime/manga convention I've ever attended, and I got the chance to catch up briefly with her. I also have Yuri Monogatari 5, which I'll review here at some point in the future.

THE...NIFTY?
-During an interview that weekend, Jason apparently mentioned my name in connection to people who know a lot about manga. I'm still flying safely under the radar, however, because it seems not even the interviewer remembers my name. Heh.
-For reasons still unknown to me, the fire alarm went off in the hotel early Sunday morning, interrupting my sleep and compelling me to "evacuate" to the ground floor. Complaints to management got me one night's refund.
-And, last but not least, the Del Rey industry panel. I've never been to a Del Rey one before, but...ma~n. You know these people are representatives of Big Media because they looked and behaved, honest to God, as though they had stepped straight out of The Matrix. (I'm surprised no one pestered them about Sailor Moon.)

I hope I haven't caused trouble by spreading the word of your mighty manga skills! (Or at least you do a very good imitation of mighty manga skills.) It was a real pleasure meeting with you, and it's a pleasure working with you too! I hope I'll make it out to MangaNEXT or AnimeNEXT again!

No, no, I was just being sarcastic. Friends nag me about putting myself out there more; being a "best-kept secret" is a long-running inside joke. But becoming a Big Name Fan (or whatever they're calling it these days) is just not one of my life's goals. Fame is too much responsibility, anyway!

Though the freelance writing has become an important part of my CV. I suppose I shouldn't protest too much.
