Except...comic book fans in Japan aren't (necessarily) nerds, which is what so many folks here in the US just don't seem to get.

Wrong terminology, perhaps, but the spirit is true. :P The article I quoted goes on to say that stock values of Broccoli and Mandarake, among other manga-related companies, jumped at the news of his potential succession. Which suggests that Aso is rather more remarkable than the average manga reader.
