"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
The first time I saw this house, I couldn't believe it.

In the four years I lived in Somerville, I went past this vintage shingle style house thousands of times, and it's never stopped amusing me. Notice any...interesting features? XD

This is an old photo from the Old House Journal. The owners have since painted the house red and black. But you get the idea.

That's an interesting turret ^_^;

Does the tower...remind you of anything? XD XD
12th-Aug-2007 08:30 pm (UTC)
What? No, not at all. Other than a huge phallus. I don't know what you mean ^_^;

It's funny; round towers were a popular Queen Anne thing during the Victorian period, but I've never--but never--seen any other house with a tower quite like this one.

You gotta wonder if people at the time remarked on it. A former neighbor from Long Valley actually sketched a picture of this house. I mentioned my impression of the tower and he said it had never occurred to him before. How could it not? ^^;;;

Yeah really, how could it not? First thing that went through my mind when the picture popped up ^_^;;

You could do some amusing things with paint color on that house ^_^

Well, I gave you a context. ^_~ Think you would have thought that about the house if you'd just been driving past?

I had to point it out to my parents, too.

I think it went though my mind before even reading the text! ^_^;; So, yeah probably...

Very sexually frustrated architect I'm thinking.. Or one with a sense of humor ^_^

I'd love to know whose idea that tower was. Owner's or architect's? ^^; Someone somewhere probably knows the history of that house; it's one of the most prominent old properties in Somerville.

"Ah yes, you mean to old Erection House!" ^__^

Maybe owned by a prominent urologist? Or the local madam ^_^;

Probably a mill owner's, or something. As that's what the street it's on was developed for, supposedly.
12th-Aug-2007 09:16 pm (UTC)
Heh, I bet his mill had the tallest smoke stacks around too ^_~

Aside from the giant penis, it's an odd looking house, kind of unbalanced or something ^^;

The photograph is from a kinda weird angle. It's not especially flattering in general.
13th-Aug-2007 08:37 pm (UTC)
The angle does seem to be meant to highlight the, err, tower ^_^;
13th-Aug-2007 09:39 pm (UTC)
Of course. The caption for the photo in the article makes it clear that the tower is what the house was included for.

It is, phallic resemblance aside, a very striking and unusual architectural detail. :P

I would love to see how they framed the top of that thing, it's just all curves ^^
14th-Aug-2007 02:03 am (UTC)
I dunno, but I know those itty-bitty windows at the top open up. I've seen them open. ^_^
14th-Aug-2007 10:25 am (UTC)
Spend a lot of time looking at that house do you? ^_~

Do they all open?
14th-Aug-2007 12:29 pm (UTC)
I don't know if they all open. But I've seen at least one open before. It was on our route to the Somerville Circle (which meant groceries, among other things), so of course I saw it A LOT. :P
12th-Aug-2007 08:33 pm (UTC)
What a beautiful, erect phalluswhatever that's supposed to be. XD
12th-Aug-2007 10:01 pm (UTC)
The Somerville Penis?
12th-Aug-2007 10:16 pm (UTC)
At least it wasn't painted skin tone, eh?
13th-Aug-2007 12:53 pm (UTC)
Actually, that brown might be SOMEONE'S skin tone. ^^;;;

But no, it's not anymore. Now it's red with a black err cap.
13th-Aug-2007 05:40 pm (UTC)
Oh dear! XD
13th-Aug-2007 05:41 pm (UTC)
Guess I should've shared this sooner, eh? XD Like when I was still living in Somerville? ^^;
14th-Aug-2007 01:38 am (UTC)
F'ing brilliant!
