A word of advice when it comes to cheap houseplants: Don't look too closely; you won't like what you see. In addition to the requisite spider mites, my palm tree also turned out to be harboring springtails, root mealy bugs (which are practically as impossible to get rid of for good as the mites), and whitefly larvae.

Okay, critters that live in the soil and don't leave it en masse I can live with. There aren't any other plants in the house for any of these pests to go to, anyway. But things that crawl that turn into things that fly--all over my room? Oh hell no. Sorry, partly_bouncy, but I've no desire to experience one of your stories personally, no matter how entertaining it was in the telling. (And I was wondering what that white insect with wings walking purposefully up the trunk of my palm was... Turns out I really didn't want to know.)

So, my poor majesty palm has been exiled to the front porch. Most likely to croak immediately as we are having a bizarre and unseasonable cold snap tonight. Ah well. Easy come, easy go, I suppose.

How is it you're having a cold snap when the rest of us are dying of record heat!? I'll trade...

Current temperature 58 degrees. I had to wear a jacket outside yesterday.

I don't know what's going on. Up until the day before yesterday, it was in the mid-90's, felt like over 100 thanks to humidity. It was causing all sorts of massive storms, too. Took out the public transportation in NYC.

No trading. XD I like being cold more than I like being hot.

Bizzaaaaare. Current temp here is 88 - which is cooler than it has been, yes, but it's freaking 2AM, not noon. And whoa, but I can't handle the heat at all this year.

And whoa, but I can't handle the heat at all this year.

I know whatcha mean. We did half the summer without air conditioning. I thought I was going to pass out just from walking down the stairs.

The long range forecast for NJ calls for upper 80's (which, when it comes to weather.com, always means lower 90's when the day actually comes), but it'll be drier. Maybe you'll have something similar there too.

It's supposed to be about 95 here today, with about 500% humidity >_<

Most of my stories involving bugs tend to involve food or cannot seal up the house any better. Sorry about the bug reppealnt to the face. My bd. Our plants tend to not have that problem.

cannot seal up the house any better

When your windows are 130 years old, it's AMAZING what comes in. I didn't know that white fly wasn't just lost... ^^;;;;

I hate that sort of thing happening.
