A word of advice when it comes to cheap houseplants: Don't look too closely; you won't like what you see. In addition to the requisite spider mites, my palm tree also turned out to be harboring springtails, root mealy bugs (which are practically as impossible to get rid of for good as the mites), and whitefly larvae.
Okay, critters that live in the soil and don't leave it en masse I can live with. There aren't any other plants in the house for any of these pests to go to, anyway. But things that crawl that turn into things that fly--all over my room? Oh hell no. Sorry, partly_bouncy
, but I've no desire to experience one of your stories personally, no matter how entertaining it was in the telling. (And I was wondering what that white insect with wings walking purposefully up the trunk of my palm was... Turns out I really didn't want to know.)
So, my poor majesty palm has been exiled to the front porch. Most likely to croak immediately as we are having a bizarre and unseasonable cold snap tonight. Ah well. Easy come, easy go, I suppose.
