Lestat: The Musical.

And here I thought she was joking.

I've talked to people who saw it in San Francisco and hated it. Reviews from NY were more positive, but I've a feeling those were Anne Rice fangirls. I still love that one (newspaper) review that called it "Lion King with vampires", on account of Elton John's songs being indistinguishable from each other.

During the prep phase, Elton made an interview in which he avowed Lestat is not a typical vampire musical - "no crosses, no garlic, no dancing vampires".

This fan of dancing vampires feels somewhat vindicated now :>

My friend who saw it in San Francisco laughed at the overwrought dialogue...
My other friend Richard in New York said that the music isn't really great

According to the NY Times article, they made some significant "improvements" to the New York production after it got panned in San Francisco.

They've got Hugh Panaro as Lestat, though. I've seen Panaro before, and he is AMAZING. Great actor with an wonderful singing voice. It might be worth to see just for him.

I love Panaro's voice too, and he's certainly got the Lestat looks - judging by the trailer, he might be the good bit about the musical, along with the Dave McKean poster. The official premiere's on Tuesday, and a little bird tells me I should have the cast album soon after it becomes available ;) Gotta love ostnotes...

>_< Are there plans to drag you along?

We're not even in the planning stage, yet; but if she ever does get her act together to go, I'm sure I'll end up tagging along. ^^;;;

Like watching train wrecks. ^_~

At least the guy playing Armand (a red-haired, "angelic"-looking youth in the novel) isn't channelling *cringes* Antonio Banderas, who was Armand in the Interview with the Vampire film.

I saw it when it openned in SF. I liked it, but I have been an Anne Rice fangirl since middle school, so I like anything with Lestat. (except for that horrible horrible Queen of the Damned movie. *shudders*)

Actually, I have nearly 100 (God help me. >_< ) books that I've already got on my immediate reading list...so I don't think I'm in any position to agree to take on the incomplete opus of an egomanical Brit right now. If I do decide at some point that I must read it, I'll buy it. Might as well, 'cause I don't think I review from me, positive or negative, will help her sales in any other way. And, given my mood at the moment, I don't know how long that 100 will take.

(FYI: I figured it out long ago.)
