"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
*shameless plug* Anime Insider #25 is out!
7th-Oct-2005 10:25 am
Highlights for the October issue include feature articles on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Gankutsuou. The Manga Department is also, thanks to being unbroken by the typical full-page ads, a little bit more attractive than usual. Be sure to check out the playful little piece on the Sukisyo! anime as well! ^_~

*glee* Advent Children XD. Man, I wish Square would release one of those official movie guide artbooks for it.
7th-Oct-2005 05:47 pm (UTC)
Yep. (Actually, it's on the cover of this month's Newtype USA issue, as well.)

Are there any related books/merchandise out for the movie at all? No movie guides?
7th-Oct-2005 06:10 pm (UTC)
The dvd's out in the US on Nov 29th but I haven't heard of books.

Not that I've come across. There's only the limited edition that ships with a copy of the Japanese script and various trinkets like the Cloud + Fenrir toy. They also have a FF7 Ultimania Omega guide, which I recently bought, that has maybe one or two pages on the movie...but the majority of it's focused on the game. I don't know if there's any new plans for the U.S. version...

Well...did you see the article in Newtype USA this month? They have some nice full-page spreads, at least.
7th-Oct-2005 04:18 pm (UTC)
Do they pay you for this?^_~
7th-Oct-2005 05:51 pm (UTC)
No, but they've been paying me for writing the articles in it. I've been writing for them for seven months now, and I see nothing wrong with plugging my own endeavors. Plus, now that Newtype USA has cut the thickness of their magazine down by about a third, they no long do release schedules--which whaddaya know makes my job relevant!

Consider these types of entries as a sort of "saabisu." ^_~

release schedules?

Yeah. As in what manga titles are coming out for the month in question.
7th-Oct-2005 07:23 pm (UTC) - Oral diarrhea starts.
Gankutsuou: The visual effects they attempted here [layering patterns and such] was not to my liking at first, but around the third episode I got used to it, and actually started to like it...

It was strange to see such a story portrayed in a setting, but it had just as many characters, with all their evil plottings spinning and unspinning nasty webs.

And there was one episode where I had to cry. Not many anime make me want to cry. And so that must be why the mention of Gankutsuou gives me a small smile...

I was so excited to watch Advent Children, too.

It's an excellent model for what animation ought to aim towards in the future; good God, I thought I could touch the flowers! So now we have the key to throw Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within into the grave [if it hasn't been already!] and hold Advent Children up to the light.

But it really is just so much fan service; I couldn't sympathize with the newer characters, the old characters were just there to show me how they would look like in a movie... and for brief seconds towards the end, too.

*shakes head* The storyline was very simple and not complex at all.

Fight scenes seemed excellent, and technically, were very excellent, but I don't have eyes that can see the speed of light. Thus, the fighting in the tunnel or in the air made my eyes hurt, trying to figure out who was fighting whom and in what sequence. [I figured the gist of it after watching it a few more times, but that's just sad to have to do that...]

The only thing I will pay attention to in this movie ever again is Vincent Valentine. Man, they did him good -- oh, so good!

I've got a lot more to say, but for all its minor shortcomings, I'm still glad I watched it... So here's me, who can't wait to buy its official American release!

Oral diarrhea ends.

The movie was pretty much pure fanservice but most fans knew that^^ Loved Vincent and how they portrayed him, and the vampire fan theory does seem to be hinted at considering his entrance in the forest.

And a lot of the movie was, if you read between the lines, major plugging for their Compilation of FF7 series. I mean, the cell phones? The prominence of the Turks (BC) and Vincent (DC) vs other returning characters? Yeah...it's pretty advertising. But screw it, sometimes I just can't help but love my fanservice.
