A BALD EAGLE!!!!

Wheeling about over the Raritan River as we crossed over into South Bound Brook, on my mother's Saturday morning ritual of garage sale hunting.

This is the first time in my entire life that I've ever seen one in the wild! They were almost entirely extinct for awhile, and even now I don't there are that many of them...

They like to hang out around here.. Not as common as hawks or those vultures that appear to be 6-feet tall ^^;; but you see them around...

Supposedly they used to be native to New Jersey (and most everywhere else in North America), and then came DDT...

Oh yeah, thin egg shells.. Way to kill off the national bird....

At least the bald eagle conservation effort met with success. ^^; It would be pretty sad if we couldn't save our own national mascot.

Although, there could be something disturbingly symbolic in your national mascot being a big bird of prey that swoops in with talons extended to kill the small and weak members of the animal kingdom ^^;;

I think a lot of countries use raptors as mascots. I know Spain does, as well.

Hmm... I think Serbia does too, it’s in my computer somewhere... I’d like maybe a hummingbird, spending its days surrounded by flowers and never bothering anyone ^__^

I don't think "flighty" is a good image for a country, though.
24th-Sep-2005 03:34 pm (UTC)
*laughs*

I didn’t think of that *^_^* But they’re very precise, and cute ^_^

They also look like monster bugs from far away. :P

Well bald eagles look like they’ve lost all their hair from a distance! What kind of image does a balding bird present? ^_^
24th-Sep-2005 03:47 pm (UTC)
Well, it *used* to be a really common bird, and I think it's one of the biggest raptors in the US. That's probably why they chose it.

Robins are pretty, they’d be good, they sing pretty too ^_^
24th-Sep-2005 03:59 pm (UTC)
But aren't they only on the Eastern side of the US?
24th-Sep-2005 04:02 pm (UTC)
How should I know? I’ve never been out West, and who cares about those people anyway ^^;;

There’s a book fair on the Mall in DC, it’s live on C-SPAN...

*laughs*
Someone needs to explain to me why they're called bald eagles when they aren't in fact bald^_^
24th-Sep-2005 02:21 pm (UTC)
Huh.... Maybe the white head makes them look bald? ^^;; That's my guess...
24th-Sep-2005 02:44 pm (UTC)
The white feathers on their heads.
24th-Sep-2005 03:41 pm (UTC)
I know. Rhetorical question on my part^^
