"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
Oh so not PC, but guess what? I DON'T CARE.

Know what charity is really? An expression of privilege and power, that's what. Why? Because the people in need will not survive without it, but the people giving can refuse to bestow their favors at any time and at no cost to them. (Never mind the many disempowered people who can't provide support because they're having trouble taking care of themselves.)

So go ahead. Give generously of your time and money. Open your homes and your hearts. Help the individual. Make yourself feel good. But if you don't also walk the talk of progressive taxation, affirmative action, universal healthcare, wage parity, and so forth, all you're truly doing is reinforcing the structures of systemic inequality that magnified the human suffering of this most recent tragedy.

And if perchance there's a Hell, I hope you stew there for eternity in the ichor of your own hypocrisy.

I am off to stew.

Err. Hmm. Comments aren't screened on this entry unless they're anonymous, but that's standard for all entries these days. Do you want me to screen them?

And for the record, this one isn't directed at you (or your husband). It's actually going out to one of my former American Minority Relations classmates. That boy spent the semester telling me racial profiling is a-okay, gay marriage is wrong, women are just whining, and opportunity is equally available to everyone. I must've gotten 20+ new gray hairs trying to respond to him civilly. And now? He's spamming my inbox thrice daily with information and updates on student charity initiatives. I have no polite words left...

They seem aimed at me, my bad if I took them wrong. Perhaps we should filter one another from our lists so we don't keep inadvertantly causing others to email us with silly snark and possible fighting. (>_>)

Some others think they are aimed at me-so I responded. Since they aren't, I won't comment anymore. (^_^)

"ichor." NICE.

Well, yes, but, I think you'll always need charity for events like this though.. It's just the immediacy of the thing, and all the people who are just not in a position to help themselves at the moment.. Even people with big bank accounts can find themselves suddenly helpless.. I think it's more like we have to fix things so relying on charity doesn't have to be a part of normal life...

*sighs* Read the entry again. My bone isn't with "charity" as a cause; rather, it's with the hypocritical and shortsighted people who think that their altruism and attention need extend no further.

I just didn't want to discourage anyone from donating ^_^

Yeah really... I think this whole thing displayed to the world the carefully hidden underbelly of American society.. It's also an underbelly that's growing, while programs to help are being cut and laws are being rewritten for the benefit of the wealthy (Bush's celebrated bankruptcy law, etc.).. I wonder if this will knock down the US superiority complex a bit..
