Historically, the incumbent party gets rolled out every time there's a slump. Plain and simple. I've been hearing that for a long time. There is simply no evidence that we would have had the same outcome if the global economy weren't in the crapper.
Or, to quote
Krugman again: "And what would have happened if Lehman had waited until November to blow up? Would smear-and-fear have worked?"
At least the depression has been good for something. Though I can't help but observe that in the United States during the Great Depression, we got FDR. While Europe got...Fascism. I hope this doesn't portend things to come.
