"In the city of my birth, I had a dream..."
Okay, Dr. Watson, a question (or two):

If it is indeed true, as you suggest, that "there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically", and black people are less intelligent (than white people, presumably) because that's in their genes, then would you please explain something to me?

In what sorts of environments, exactly, would selecting for stupidity (or even just *not* selecting for intelligence) equate with survival of the fittest???

Or how about this one. To whom is honest-to-god idiocy sexier than smarts?

The 79-year-old geneticist said he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the testing says not really.". He said he hoped that everyone was equal, but countered that “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”.

O_o

Oh my… At the very least there, he’s ignoring the vast role those super intelligent white euro types played in turning Africa in the f**ked up mess much of it is today.. And… Guh….

If it were even true (and it's totally unprovable) that Africans on a whole are stupider than White Europeans, might all that malnutrition, disease, and socio-political instability have something to do with it?

Hell, we know that American blacks are more at risk for hypertension than American whites not because they are genetically predisposed but because the fact of being black (and all the accompanying baggage) in America literally makes you hypertensive.

Absolutely! Starving an infant will certainly damage brain development.. And when both your parents die of AIDS and you’re out of school and struggling to support your younger siblings at 13, you’re probably not going to experience a whole lot of intellectual development or further education..

Kind of like saying black kids here just naturally do worse in school, while ignoring that they’re far more likely to be in poor areas with schools that are underfunded and lacking in basic resources.. And now even more likely, thank you Supreme Court >_<

But we still don't even know if the hypothesis black = stupider is TRUE! That whole performance bias thingie (not to mention cultural differences) makes it virtually impossible to figure out.

Also, I’m kind of reminded of Bill Bennett claiming there’s more crime in predominately black inner city areas because blacks are naturally prone to crime, and his utter shock and confusion that not everyone agreed with him….

Try smashing your head against the desk. I find it makes me feel better after reading about him.

I'm already there.... aaaagh!

My grandmother is 85 and not a geneticist and she doesn't spout this rubbish.

Watson is well-known as a nut-job and eugenics enthusiast. He thinks it would be quite OK to abort foetuses if there was a chance they were going to turn out homosexual. He's keen on creating better babies. You know, a kind of master race. Now where have we heard that before?

What's scary is that nutters like Watson actually get listened to these days.

*sighs* And I read his The Double Helix book in high school. Who would've thought the guy could be so ugly?

Actually the story told by others about the discovery of the Double Helix casts him in a rather unfortunate light as well.

the story told by others

Which is...? *curious*

I sent you a message on YM. Could you check if that's the correct address?
