Winter
Well, I'm back. Even (Can we believe it???) a day earlier than expected as the weather reports forecasted, correctly, thunderstorms for the entire day. In fact, rain fell so furiously that the highway past White Plains was completely flooded. Traffic was stopped dead in the other direction. During rush hour, no less. Lucky them.

In any case, I had the dubious honor of meeting my godmother's new German Shepherd. The dog is the most dysfunctional that I have ever seen--she literally cringed every time my mother went past, creeped around the house like she wished she were a fifth the size she is, cowered in corners, and jumped at the sight of her own shadow. The dog is five years old and has never been socialized. A veritable basket case, a bottomless pit into which my godmother will undoubtedly throw endless amounts of time, money, and emotions. Though too frightened right now to be aggressive, my mother is concerned that she might one day become so, and I worry about that also. After all, all my godmother will do is encourage the dysfunction. See, it's one thing to have problem terriers, toy poodles, and pugs--it's another thing to have a big dog that is so unstable. *sighs* Of course, she'll never give the dog up now; the dog "needs" her too much, and she needs to be needed.

On Sunday, we went to see Tim Burton's remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I have five words: Oh. My. God. Michael. Jackson. That's right. Johnny Depp was channeling the voice and facial expressions (not to mention pasty complexion) of the pop singer...and I don't think I need to tell you how much of a sinister edge this gave the film. Otherwise, the movie is what the reviewers have been saying: Best for the first 30 minutes, ponderous for the reminder, and inconsistent in its addition of Wonka's backstory. Ah, yes. Updating the avid TV watcher to an avid videogame player didn't exactly work.

Otherwise, I spent my Internet-less weekend for the most part reading my from my backlog of novels. Two completely read, and I'm in the throes of a third. ^__^

All in all, a pretty uneventful vacation to Maine. Anything exciting happen in anyone else's life this past weekend? ^_^

Johnny Depp is claiming there was no channeling of the Michael Jackson! He's probably just saying that for legal reasons ^_~ I thought the same thing just seeing the TV commercials... Creepy >_<

Ariss convinced me to read my recently acquired Harry Potter collection, seeing as how I broke down and ordered the new one (Amazon Canada just gave me a free shipping upgrade ^_^). So, I read through the first one today.. I'm actually kind of impressed with myself for cruising through 300+ pages so quick, so it would be very impolite to remind me that it was written for children......

That's about as dramatic as my life has been in your absence, really....

*twitches* I'm not surprised he's denying it. Does he offer up any alternative models? (Since we know from Pirates of the Carribean that he's wont to parody real-life people...)

So was it OMGEXCELLENT or just "bearable"? ^_^

Hmm.. Well, the impression I kept getting was kinda thin and lacking in detail.. Of course it was written for kids, who sometimes have an even lower attention span than I do, but I thought it moved too quickly. I would have expected more description too; people, places, etc.. I quickly realized just how much development had to be done for the movie...
Plus, not exactly prose that rolls off your tongue and sticks in your head....

*sighs*

I already know how the new one ends too, and I haven't even gotten it yet.. [info]mordath should realize you can't offer knowledge to a trained scientist and expect him to refuse ^_~ I've never personally found that knowing the end really "spoiled" a story though....

Lo siento - you could have marked the entry and come back. ^_^ I didn't really talk much about what happened before the end (that all happened in other people's entries), so there's still some suprises in store. Most of them seem to be delivered by the Exposition Fairy, but what can you do?

As for my weekend - I hiked my feet raw, and found wild blackberries in my front yard. It rocked. Then I read Harry Potter in about four hours Sunday night so that the Internet would once again be safe for browsing.

I think you're right about Snape turning out to be the good guy in the end, it's one of those formulaic things that almost must happen.. That struck me as soon as I saw the character in the first movie, he came off so bad that he must be good....

I don't know how you read that thing in just 4 hours, what is it like 800+ pages? Maybe if the halves of your brain are each reading a different page....... Scary ^_^ I read a lot slower if I'm really trying to read the thing.. If I'm going through journal articles or something I'll fly through with hi-liter in hand, just pulling out the important stuff..

I have wild blueberries here, they're tiny but very sweet ^_^

I think it ended up being around 650 pages - I just read really, really fast sometimes. Amazingly, comprehension doesn't suffer. When I was younger I used to go through 20+ books a week, which is why my really long and scary list of books to read is only slightly, rather than completely, insane. Now? I have too many hobbies, but I can make it through 2-4 books per week without too much difficulty, provided I have the time to actually sit down and read.
19th-Jul-2005 02:12 pm (UTC)
Well. And the Harry Potter books have pretty big typeface. :P

When I was younger (mid-teens) I used to skim through description passages, which sped my reading time tremendously without damaging my comprehension of the overarching plot. However, as I've gotten older, I've become a much more thorough reader; I read everything that I read as if it were a textbook. I've timed my speed often, as I need to know whether or not I'll be able to finish that novel before class ^_~, and I know that I read thoroughly at 1-2 pages per minute. Adult books, of course.

Hey, speaking of that long scary list, have you read Troll: A Love Story, yet? I recall reccing that one--it is an *excellent* novel.

I'm reading an anthology right now, and have a two-book omnibus up next, but I'll add that to the pot for right after that.

Plus, not exactly prose that rolls off your tongue and sticks in your head....

That is my biggest complaint by far. ^^; Especially since I think children's books *should* be entertaining at the sentence level.

I already know how the new one ends too, and I haven't even gotten it yet..

I've never been one to give a damn about spoilers. It's always sounded a bit immature to me; "Don't you *dare* tell me what happens!" And a very superficial way of reading, to boot. I'm more interested in *why* or *how* a thing happens, for example. But then, I've always been more interested in texts and writers than readers. ^^;

*nods*

I think pretty much all books should.. I even try to get my academic stuff to read pleasantly, to the extent I can..

I sometimes actually prefer to know the ending ahead of time, or knowing it makes me more anxious to read.. The first time I ordered from Amazon UK was to get a book that wouldn't be released here for months, because I had found out the main character dies, and I just HAD to read it!

*nod nod* Yeah, I have a distinctive voice in my academic writing, as well. Come to think of it, I'm very sensitive to inflection in general and can mimic the styles of other people to some extent. I also recognize immediately when people are quoting me. ^^;

*laughs* What book was that?
19th-Jul-2005 04:55 pm (UTC)
It was The Remorseful Day, the last book of a British mystery series.. Inspector Morse died ;_; There was like a 6 or 8 month delay before it would be released here! It was also a British TV series, with episodes that followed the books, and others that were written for TV..

The writing is the part that really came the easiest for me in grad school, but I liked to write before, so it was just an adaptation.. A lot of students REALLY had a hard time with the writing....

I saw the trailer at the movies and I swear to god I felt a literal chill go down my spine. The crazy-sounding song alone was bad enough, but when I saw Depp's poses and facial expressions...

Let's say no one's going to drag me to watch this movie. *shudders*

Let's say no one's going to drag me to watch this movie. *shudders*

Is that your horror flick phobia talking? ^_~

Or were you getting the Michael Jackson vibes, too?

As for the song, well, I thought that was a highlight of the film, to be honest. The way it is actually featured in the film was both hilarious and, as usually, just a touch sinister.
19th-Jul-2005 02:44 am (UTC)
No, there was just something in the trailer that strongly hinted at paedophilia. And now that you mentioned Micheal Jackson, the image is doubly reinforced in my mind.
19th-Jul-2005 02:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think the trailer had something about "the boy who wins his heart" or something like that. There was...something...to that. That did seem a bit pedophilic to me. However, I think in the film it was more the Michael Jackson that never grew up, which perhaps is sinister because, like a child, he might be unpredictable. There wasn't anything that gave off sexual vibes to me per se...not like The Little Prince, for example. ^^;
19th-Jul-2005 04:40 am (UTC)
well. i do agree that johnny depp did have a michael jackson quality to his portrayal of willy wonka. i think he was much too bizarre a hermit to molest any of them. didn't seem like the toucy-feely type
19th-Jul-2005 02:18 pm (UTC)
*nods* I didn't get any pedophilic impressions from Depp's portrayal of Willy Wonka, per se. Rather the unpredictability of a child-adult, which, perhaps, haunts Michael Jackson as well. The sinister element was that, I thought, as well as what channeling the pop star would necessarily imply to the adults watching the film. That the story is a *dark* fantasy as well as an escapist one.
